Description
This multi-author volume is a collection of papers presented at the international conference on Pakistan organized by the Southern Asian Institute, Center of Pakistan Studies, and American Institute of Pakistan Studies, at the Columbia University, in April 2003. The papers included in this volume have several distinguishing features. First, they examine the history, society and culture of Pakistan from multiple angles. Second, a number of papers offer important and significant shifts from the dominant discourses of Pakistan Studies and set the tone for alternative ways to analyze issues confronting Pakistani society and the state. Third, the volume is inter-disciplinary in spirit and content and brings together the theoretical insights and empirical research on Pakistan in an unprecedented manner.
About the Author / Editor
Professor Saeed Shafqat obtained M.A. (Geography) from the Punjab University. He has M.A. (South Asian Studies) and Ph.D. (Political Science) from University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. He is a founder member and former Chairman of the Department of Pakistan Studies established in 1973 at the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. His research articles on culture, politics, security and various aspects of public policy and reform on Pakistan have been published in journals of international repute. He has served as Chief Instructor (1988-2001), Pakistan Civil Services Academy, Lahore. He has been President, Institute of Regional Studies Islamabad. He was Fulbright Fellow for the year 1992-93. He has been Director of Fulbright Seminar in Pakistan for the years 1991 and 1994. He was Visiting Professor at MAISON DES SCIENCES DEL’HOMME, Paris (France) 2000. He has been Adjunct Professor at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Lahore. He has done Consultancies on governance, institution building, electoral reform and democracy for Asian Development Bank and UNDP. Until recently he was Quaid-i-Azam Distinguished Professor and Chair (March 2001- May 2005), Pakistan Center at the School of International Affairs and Public Policy (SIPA), Columbia University in the city of New York. Currently, he is Executive Director, National Institute of Population Studies (NIPS), Islamabad.
